Ironic that Newman’s vision of a shattered USSA isn’t too dissimilar from our current United States, and even the stuff that gets exacerbated by Capone’s Stalinistic tactics magnified by his mafioso tendencies, proving that even through a mirror darkly some things never change aren’t exactly things that went good for the capitalistic reality of the US. The early idealism of this change is misplaced, however; upon Debs’ death inpower is seized by Al Capone an obvious parallel to Joseph Stalinjust as Debs is used to newma the achievements of Vladimir Leninwho proceeds to rule over the USSA with a brutal, repressive fist newjan iron, establishing a cult of personality around himself, exiling and executing his political rivals and ruling the country more brutally and ruthlessly and incompetently than any of the robber barons newmann were previously deposed.

His pseudonymous novels, as Jack Yeovil, play elegant games with genre cliche–perhaps the best of these is the sword-and-sorcery novel Drachenfels which takes the prescribed formulae of the games company to whose bible it was written and make them over entirely into a Kim Newman novel.
